Bone Health

  • Decreased bone density (osteopenia) is common in individuals with chronic neutropenia — perhaps more common than in the normal population.

  • Long-term use of G-CSF may increase the likelihood of osteopenia.

  • SCNIR studies have not shown an increase in osteoporosis or fractures, but data are incomplete

  • DEXA scans can measure bone density in adults and adolescents, but require special interpretation for children.

  • Lifestyle practices can promote bone health.

  • To learn more about bone health, see this link. This talk, presented at the SDS Conference, is also relevant to individuals with neutropenia.
