Taking Care of Infants and Children
-
Teach children good hand washing habits early.
-
Stay up to date on recommended vaccines. Neutropenia is not a contraindication to receiving live viral vaccines such as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) or varicella-zoster (chicken pox).
-
All family members and other individuals who will have close or frequent contact with your child should have all their recommended vaccines. This includes annual influenza vaccine and COVID19 vaccination and boosters.
-
To reduce the risk of anal infections, do not take rectal temperature measurements or administer suppositories.
-
Bath time is an excellent time for a skin and nail check. Look for nails that need to be trimmed to prevent infection from scratches. Check for scratches, cuts, inflammation, or infection.
-
Talk to your hematologist or pediatrician if your child is having frequent or severe skin infections.
